Challenge
Delays in the lab were backing up the entire ED
Blood samples sat in a waiting area until Environmental Services could send a transport — anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes. Batching made it worse. Patients were frustrated, staff was apologetic, and ED beds were tied up waiting on lab results. The bottleneck was costing everyone time.
Solution
WALL-E — a robot built to get results there faster
Staff named their Relay robot through an in-house contest and WALL-E rolled out in April 2019. From that point, blood draws went straight into the robot and directly to the lab, with zero batching delays. Relay also verified bin temperatures stayed within 1.3°C of ambient to protect sample integrity. WALL-E proved so effective he expanded to Outpatient Surgery deliveries too.
